Cooperatives have been part of the Purdue University Community for over 75 years. In the fall of 1965, a group of amazing women volunteered to leave their houses and create a home to provide inexpensive living, and thrive in love, sisterhood, responsibility, and leadership. In the spring of 1966, Karen McKenzie, Ruth Ina Vuskains, Wanda Baker, and Janet Copp officially became the charting members of Maclure. Later that year, Maclure welcomed home 16 women as its first members.
Our house was built in 1900 and was originally owned by a doctor. It was later bought by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, followed by Sigma Tau Gamma. In 1966, when the Cooperative Community acquired the house, Maclure sisters quickly began remodeling during the summer. We are proud to say that Maclure Cooperative is still at the original Maclure house at 128 Wiggins Street. |
